When a supporting wall comes out, something has to take its place to carry the load above — and that’s the steel beam, or RSJ. Get this right and your new open space is rock-solid and safe for the life of the house. Get it wrong and it’s dangerous. We take it seriously and do it by the book.

We supply and install correctly-sized steel beams as part of wall removals, extensions and knock-throughs across Wrexham, Chester and North Wales.

What’s involved

We arrange for the beam to be properly sized by structural calculation, based on exactly what it needs to carry — never a guess.

We safely prop the structure, position and seat the steel on correctly-built supports (padstones), and ensure everything is fitted to spec.

The beam is then fire-protected and boxed in or plastered over as required, and the work is signed off under building regulations so you’ve got proper documentation.

Your most common questions

Why do I need a steel beam?

Because once a load-bearing wall is gone, the weight it was carrying — floors, walls, roof above — needs a new path to the ground. The steel beam carries that load across the new opening.

Who works out the size of the beam?

It’s calculated by a structural engineer based on the loads involved. We arrange this as part of the job so the beam is correctly specified, not estimated.

Will I see the beam afterwards?

Usually not — it’s typically boxed in or plastered over so you’re left with a clean opening. If you’d prefer an exposed steel look, we can do that too.
